My Journey in Game Call Making

Hello, I’m McClain, though many know me as "Mac." My journey into the world of game call making began about 15 years ago, and it's been a remarkable voyage that intertwines my passion for craftsmanship with my love for the outdoors. It all started at a National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) convention 2010, where I was first introduced to the artistry behind handcrafted game calls. The intricate details and the skill required to create these calls fascinated me and sparked a passion that I didn't even know I had.

Growing up, my grandfather was an avid woodworker, and his influence loomed large in my life. Watching him transform raw materials into beautiful, functional pieces instilled in me a deep appreciation for craftsmanship. I realized that call making would allow me to honor that legacy while also exploring my creative side. I began my journey by diving into books and manuals that outlined the techniques of call making, absorbing everything I could. However, it wasn't until 2011 that I truly found my community through the online THO Game Calls forums. Connecting with other enthusiasts and seasoned call makers opened up a world of knowledge and inspiration that I had been longing for.

One of the most transformative experiences for me came from building relationships within this community. I had the privilege of meeting Master call maker Aaron Wingert of Wingert’s Woodworks, who invited me to his annual "turnathon." This event was a game changer for me. Surrounded by talented artisans, I learned so much in just a few days, absorbing tips and techniques that would shape my craft. It was here that I realized the power of collaboration and mentorship in this field. Later, I met Troy Taylor, a Master call maker and NWTF HOF inductee who had studied under the legendary Jack Wilson of Flint, MI. Troy introduced me to a unique duck call-making technique that has since become a signature part of my work. These connections not only enriched my skills but also fostered friendships that I cherish to this day.

On a personal level, I’m a husband to my beautiful wife Rachel and a father to a daughter Madelynn & son Everett.  I believe in involving my children in the call-making process. It’s important to me that they experience the joy of creating something with their own hands. I hope

to 1 day work together on projects to not only strengthens our bond but also instill them with a sense of pride and accomplishment. My background as a skilled tradesman in tool and die work has also been a tremendous asset in this journey. The precision and attention to detail required in my day job translate seamlessly into my call-making, allowing me to create products that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Hunting has always been a significant part of my life. As an avid outdoorsman, I find that my experiences in the field deeply influence my craft. Each time I venture out, I think about how my calls can enhance the hunting experience. I strive to create pieces that not only sound authentic but also reflect the quality and craftsmanship that I believe every hunter deserves. For me, each call is more than just a tool; it’s a connection to nature and a bridge to unforgettable hunting experiences.

Looking back, I’m grateful for the journey I've taken from a novice to a skilled game call maker. It has been a path filled with learning, mentorship, and community. I’ve had the privilege to meet incredible people and build lasting friendships along the way. My story is one of blending personal passion with professional skills, and I’m excited to continue crafting calls that resonate with fellow hunters and outdoor enthusiasts.
